Portable Crate Homework Station

Quick…send your children away from the computer! Yes, it is that time of the year when the dreaded HOMEWORK begins again! Today I am going to show you how we handle homework on the go…

DIY Portable Homework Station

Homework Station

For our family, we have a need to carry our homework supplies with us. I have a daughter and son, and their activities after school are very different and each of them has down time to complete their homework prior to getting home. This allows more family time once we get home! My inspiration for this came from my  DIY Vintage Crates that I made this spring for our Summer Reading Station.

Supplies Needed for Homework Crate…{affiliate links}

  • Simply spray paint the crate with the Rustoleum Red Spray Paint and allow to dry.
  • While it is drying, spray paint the wooden plaque with the Krylon Chalkboard Spray Paint per instructions.
  • Once both are completely dry, use the Gorilla glue {careful..read the instructions..it expands! } to attach the chalkboard to the crate.
That’s all…easy peasy!!

Organizing Our Homework Supplies…

Homework Station

Yep…I got all that in those containers! Please keep in mind that my children are rising 8th grade and rising 5th grade. All these supplies may not be needed for your individual needs, or you may need other items! I picked these based on what I know we need and I wished we had had in the past. Yes, that is an actual dictionary and thesaurus..gasp! You never know when you may not have WIFI or just want a kid to learn how to look it up! 🙂

Supply List {that works for us!}…

Red pens, black pens, blue pens, index cards, college ruled paper, wide ruled paper, blank paper, ruler, erasers, pencil, pencil sharpener, thesaurus, dictionary, sticky notes, colored pencils, fine tip markers, large plastic envelopes, scissors, white out, glue stick, highlighter, and Altoids {don’t ask!}.

We may see a need to add other items and I have allowed enough room to do so!

Homework Station

I found these absolutely perfect plastic containers at Target to put everything in! The snap lids are wonderful for preventing accidental spills. The larger one is the perfect size for paper storage! The large plastic envelopes are for putting finished homework in until we get home…you know somehow it can manage to get lost in the car!! 🙂

I keep a 3 ring binder in the crate as well. This is MY notebook to keep track of all things school and afterschool  related!

So, off it goes to the car for yet another fabulous year! I hope that everyone has an incredible school year!

Ok…now you can bring the kiddos back in…I will keep the homework thing our little secret!

Back To School can also be a great time for some fun! This back to school party that Trish threw for her neighborhood a few years back is a great idea. Who doesn’t love an Ice Cream Social??

This would really help kick off the new school year in a fun way!

Great idea! And I love that the crate is so cute and everything can be neatly organized instead of spread all over the dining room table 24/7! I may just have to do this for home schooling supplies – it seems we always end up with more than they can stuff in their lockers!

Great idea! Even if kids aren’t in a lot of after school activities, a homework station like this would keep all the supplies in one place. My daughter’s 2nd grade teacher called it a “Homework Survival Kit”. We didn’t spend any extra time searching around for supplies after we had set up a survival kit. Thanks for the tip and tutorial!

This is an awesome idea! I think this would be good to have even to keep in the house. My kids don’t have desks in their rooms, so this might come in handy to keep near the dining room table. Thanks for posting!

Our homework/stationary storage isn’t quite working for us (I still get “mummmm, I need a pencillll” most days!). I need to upgrade to a better and cuter system like this 🙂

This is such a good idea! In our new house we have yet to figure out the best place for homework to take place!! This might be the solution!

My kids are all kindergarten and pre-k so homework isn’t a concern yet. HOWEVER, my kids love to write and color so I think I’m going to implement this idea with coloring supplies for anytime they feel the creative urge. Right now it’s scattered throughout the house so when they want to color I have to scramble to find stuff for them! Loving this idea
