Easter Resurrection Garden…{ A Tutorial }

Easter is simply a wonderful time of the year…spring arrives, the earth becomes green, new life…it just warms the heart. My children are now getting beyond the age of the Easter Bunny {insert gasp here!} and although he still comes to visit, I wanted to really focus on the meaning of the Easter season this year. So, as part of our Easter Activities,  we created this simple Easter Resurrection Garden…

Easter-Resurrection-Garden

I have seen “resurrection gardens” on, yep, you guessed it..pinterest and thought it would be a perfect way to capture the meaning of the season. Here is what you will need…

Potting Soil
Large Terra Cotta Saucer
Small Terra Cotta Pot
River Rocks
Grass Seed {needs to be quick growing}
Twigs
Jute Twine

First, place a small amount of potting soil in the saucer. Then, place the small terra cotta pot on its side {a little offset to one side} in the saucer. This small pot will become the tomb of Jesus. Next, place more dirt in the saucer, and up and around the small terra cotta pot, making a small mound on each side.

**Hint: Have a spray bottle of plain water nearby to wet the dirt in order to both shape it and get it to stay in place! Also, you see that my saucer is elevated..I actually made a cakestand, I will be back another time with that tutorial!**

Now, you will add your river rocks. I simply placed them as if it was a path to the tomb.

**Hint: Do this project with a few friends, it will both be fun and meaningful and you will have ample rocks and grass seed for many of these!**

Here is a view looking down, so that you can get a better view of how I placed my river rocks!

Now, sprinkle the grass seed over the dirt, being careful to try not to get much on the rocks. Spray it down, gently, with water {I used a spray bottle}. You will need to water it daily!

 The seed I used has a germination period of about 4 days…let’s hope!

Finally, take your twigs and twine and fashion three crosses. I simply wrapped the twine around in an “x” pattern and tied it off. Gently push them in the soil behind the tomb.

The final thing I need is a large rock to place beside the tomb! And, now I wait…much like I wait for my savior.

Ann Voscamp’s Blog : A Holy Experience has an incredible post on how to incorporate your garden throughout Holy Week.

I am going to take a photo each day until Easter to watch the grass grow, and as a learning opportunity for teaching my children about waiting for the return of our Savior.

I hope that this week is a time of reflection and renewal for you. When I think of my life, I am forever humbled and grateful for the undeserved gift of grace and mercy, that I have been given through the sacrifice of a son…Jesus.

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”

                                Isaiah 53:5

    We always plant one – not so pretty and uncommon as yours – on every Lent and Advent. The same way our Hope grows so it will the garden.
    I will pin this for next year to do a more elaborated one.
    Thank you for sharing and inspiring,
